PISTON

In Machinery, a short cylinder of wood or metal, which fits exactly the cavity of a pump or barrel, and works up and down in it alternately. Two sorts of pistons are used in pumps: one hollow, with a valve, used in the sucking pump: and the other solid, which is employed in the forcing pump. See Pump. [s. 950]
