EGAN, MAURICE FRANCIS

(1852), an ‘American diplomat and writer, d. in Philadelphia, Pa. He graduated from La Salle College, in 1873, took a postgraduate course at George town College, in Washington, D. C., then took up journalism, being sub-editor of McGees Illustrated Weekly during 1877-9, of the Catholic Review during 1879-80, a ociate-editor, then editor, of The Freeman's Journal, 1880-8, after which he was for seven years profe or of English at the University of Notre Dame, and profe or of the English language and literature at the Catholic University of America, from 1895 until 1907. In the latter year he was sent to Denmark as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary, where he remained until 1918. It was during his term of office that the Danish West Indies were bought by the United States. He was offered the amba adorship to Vienna by both President Taft and President Wilson, but declined. Among his many works are ists’, ‘Songs and Sonnets, and other Poems’; In a Brazillian Forest’; ‘The Ghost in Hamlet, and other E ays in Comparative Literature’; ‘The Ivy Hedge’ 1914, and ‘Ten Years on the German Frontier’ 1919.
