[As chlorome ter + -y.] The proce for testing the decoloring power of any combination of chlorin, but especially of the commercial articles, the chlorids of lime, potash, and soda. [ φύλλον , leaf, + -ite2 .] A green mica- ceo us mineral from Unity in the State of Maine, allied to fahlunite. chlorophylloid (klō-ro-filoid), a. [ chlorophyl + -oid . ] Resembling chlorophyl. chlorophyllous (klō-ro-fil'us), a. [ chlorophyl +-ous.] Same as chlorophyll a ceo us . These cells contain very little or no chlorophyllous pro- H. C. [ χλωρός , pale-green, + πικρός , sharp, pungent, + -in2.] A pungent colorle liquid (CNO2Cl3), the va- por of which attacks the eyes powerfully. It is prepared by the action of bleaching-powder on picric acid or of nitric acid on chloral. Also called nitrochloro- chloroplastid (klō-rō-plas'tid), n. [ ρός , pale-green, + πλαστός , verbal n. of πλάσσειν , form, mold, + -id1.] In bot . , a chlorophyl gran- ule. Also called chloroleucite . chloroplatinic (klōrō-pla-tin'ik), a. [ r ( in ) + plat in ( um ) +-ic.] Compounded of chlo- rin and platinum. - Chloroplatinic acid, H2PtCl6, an acid, usually called platinum chlorid , obtained by dis- solving platinum in aqua regia, and evaporating this solu- chloruret (klō'rö-ret), n. [ chlor ( in ) + -uret .] A compound of chlorin: now called chlorid . chlorureted, chloruretted (klō'rö-ret-ed), a. [ chloruret + -ed2 .] Impregnated with chlorin. Chloropsis (klō-rop's is), n. [NL. (Jardine and chlorydric, a . Same as hydrochloric . Selby, 1826), χλωρός , pale-green, + ὄψις , view.] An extensive genus of oscine pa erine birds, of the family Timeliidæ and subfamily cho (cho), n. The genus is usually called Phyllornis (which see). choana (kō'a-na), n.; pl. cho anæ (-nē). [NL., Chloroscombrinæ (klōrō-skom-brī nē), n . pl . Gr. χοάνη , a funnel, a funnel-shaped hollow [ NL ., Chloroscombrus + -inæ.] A subfamily (in the brain), connected with χόανος , a melt- of fishes, of the family Carangid a , represented by the genus Chloroscombrus . The premaxillaries fin like the second dorsal and longer than the abdomen; the maxillary with a supplemental bone; the body much compre ed; the back and abdomen trenchant; and the dorsal outline le strongly curved than the ventral. Two wide-ranging species are known. chloroscombrine (klō-rō-skom'brin), a . and n. I. a . Pertaining to or having the characters of the Chloroscombrina . II. n. A carangoid fish of the subfamily Chlo- roscombrina . Chloroscombrus (klō-rō-skom brus), n. [NL. (Girard, 1858), χλωρός , yellowish-green, + σκόμβρος, a scomber: see scomber .] The typical genus of Chloroscombrina . chlorosis (klō-rō'sis), n. [NL., χλωρός , greenish-yellow, + -osis . Cf. Gr. χλωρότης , green- ne , palene .] 1. The greensickne , a pe- culiar form of anemia or bloodle ne which affects young women at or near the period of puberty. It is characterized by a pale or greenish hue of the skin, amenorrhea, weakne , languor, palpitation, dyspepsia, depraved appetite, etc. 2. In bot .: (a) Etiolation. The term is sometimes limited to the blanching which occasionally occurs in plants from lack of iron, an element which is found to be e ential to the formation and green color of chlorophyl granules. (b) A transformation of the ordinarily colored parts of a flower into green leaf-like or sepal-like organs, as in what are known as IMG:content-0328.jpg:[ocr errors] IMG:content-0329.jpg:[blocks in formation] chlorophyll an (klō-rō-fil'an), n. [ chlorophyl + chlorosperm ( at- ) + -ous .] Resembling or be- (klo-ro-filantroporn longing to the algal group Chlorospermeæ . Also of green crystals by the evaporation of puri- chlorospermous . fied solution of chlorophyl pigment in alcohol, Chlorospermeæ (klō-ro-spèr mē-ē), n. pl . chlorophyll i an (klō-ro-fil'i-an), a . [ chloro- [NL., Gr. χλωρός , pale-green, + σπέρμα , seed, IMG:content-0330.png:[blocks in formation] choanate (kō'a-nāt), a . [ choana + -atel .] Provided with a choana or infundibulum; spe- cifically, collared or collar-bearing, as certain animalcules. choanite (kō'a-nīt), n. [ choanites , χοάνη , a funnel (see choana ), + -ites : see-ite2.] A spongiform fo il zoöphyte of the Chalk, of the genus Choanites , familiarly called petrified anemone , from having the radiating appearance of a sea-anemone. choanocytal (kō"a-nō-sī'tal), a . [ choanocyte + -al .] Of or r pertaining per to a choanocyte; trated membrane, which forms a second inner lining to the flagellated chamber. Encyc. Brit ., XXII. 418. James Clark, 1871), neut. pl. of cho a- no flag ell at us : see cho a no flagellate .] The collar- bearing flagellate infusorians; a group or or- Cho a no flag ell at a with a contained endoplastule and two or more contractile vesicles, usually conspicuous. They inhabit salt and fresh water, and increase by longitudinal or transverse fis sion, and by encystment and subdivision of the entire body into sporular elements. The principal genera are Codo sig a, Codomeca, Salpingecastmobrion and Distoph. cho somata.
