Lat. capellanus, from capella . An ecclesiastic who has a chapel, or performs service in a chapel. - A clergyman who belongs to a ship of war, to a regiment of land forces, .; as, an army chaplain . - A divine retained to perform divine service in a family; as, a chaplain in ordinary.
