Volatile

(võl'ah-til.) [L. volatilis, flying.] (Chem.) An epithet for substances which evaporate, or gradually pa off, of themselves in the aëriform state: as musk, ammonia, and the various e ential oils. Alcohol and ether are called V. liquids for a similar reason, and because they easily pa into the state of vapor on the application of heat. [s. 943]
