The species are numerous, as Z. cellar i a (see cellar snail). Z. milium is a very small species of the United States; Z. umbilicata is known as the open snail . The ge nus in a broad sense includes species of Hyalin a and related forms; but it is also restricted to about a dozen species of the Mediterranean region, as Z. algirus. Zonitidæ (zō-nit'i-dē), n . pl . [NL., Zonites + -idæ.] A family of terrestrial gastropods, typified by the genus Zonites : same as Fitrinida . Trans. New Zealand Inst ., 1883. Zonitinæ (zō-ni-ti'nē), n. pl. [NL., Vitrinidæ or another family, typified by the genus Zonites , and in- cluding forms with a helicoid shell (into which the animal can completely withdraw) and with lateral bicuspid and marginal acute teeth. Zonitis (zō-ni'tis), n. [NL. (Fabric i us, 1775), ζωνίτις , fem. of ζωνίτης : see Zonites .] A ge- nus of blister-beetles, of the family Cantharidæ , of wide distribution and comprising about 40 species, of which 6 are North American. They are very variable in color and size, but are distinguished by having the outer lobe of the maxilla not prolonged. [
