porcelain gilding (porslangil"ding)

A gold pigment used in decorating porcelain. It is a magma of gold, quicksilver, and flux, thinned with oil and turpentine. When fired, the volatile ingredients are sublimed, and the black magma a umes a dead-gold surface, which must be burnished to acquire the bright metallic appearance.
