A genus and family of Hymenopterous insects, popularly known as Wood-wasps. Most of the larger species are marked with yellow rings; the smaller are generally wholly black. They are extremely active in their movements, and may be seen lively employed, in the hottest sunshine, extracting nectar from the flowers, or running about in search of other insects, on which they prey.
