[Sp. mesteño belonging to the mesta or graziers.] 1. Zool .: The wild horse of the prairies, descended from the stock introduced into America by the first Spanish colonists. Mustangs are of various colors, cream-color and piebalds being very common. They are found in the greatest numbers in southwestern Texas; few are seen west of the Rio Grande. "The mustang is not subject to the ordinary evils of horse-flesh. Sparing in diet, a stranger to grain, easily satisfied, whether on growing or dead gra , it does an amount of work with ease that would turn all other horses, if they lived through it, into broken-down drudges."-T.
