Leighton, ROBERT

1611-1684. Bp. of Dunblane 1661, Abp. of Glasgow 1672-74; a saintly and unworldly man, who held his office under protest, and made haste to resign it and escape into obscurity. His works, all posthumous, are still highly valued. -His father, ALEXANDER, M.D., 1568-1646, for a violent book, Sion's Plea against Prelacie, 1628, was whipped, clipped, branded, pilloried, heavily fined, and imprisoned 1629-40.
