Gorres

Jakob Joseph von, a German author; born in_ Coblentz, Pru ia, Jan. 25, 1776. He died in Munich, Jan. 29, 1848, Gorringe, Henry H., an Ameriean naval officer; born of English pare ents in Barb a does, W. I., Aug. 11, 1841; settled in the United States early in life; jomed the Union navy in 1862, and served with the Mi i ippi squadron under Porter, taking a eonspieuous part in nearly all of the important actions of that squadron; and was promoted lieutenant-commander in July, 1865. He is best remembered by his removal of the Egyptian obelisk (Cleopatra’s Needle) which the khedive had presented to the United States, from Egypt to New York city, in the fron ve el “ De oug.” The total cost of transportation was $100,000, which was y ¥ the late William H. Vanderiit, The obelisk arrived in New York harbor July 20, 1880, and was erected in Central Park, Jan. 23, 1881. Gorringe was the author of a “ History of Egyptian Obelisks.” He died in New York city, July 6, 1885.
