now PECS (fuinf’ kirk-én; ‘Five Churches,’ supposed to be the Roman Coloni a Serbinum), a free town of Hungary, on the slope of a hill, 105 miles s.s.w. of Budapest. It is the see of a bishop, and the cathedral, a handsome Gothie structure, is one of the oldest ecciesiastical edifices in Hungary. Fiinfkirchen once had a flourishing university, attended by 2,000 students. Its industries comprise the manufacture of fine pottery, woollens, leather, and liqueurs.
