Built in a curve acro a river, the convexity being up stream. It resists water-pre ure like an arch if it is built against shore abutments, but when these are lacking the arched form adds nothing to the strength. Arc he gastrula. Primitive gastrula , now seen most nearly represented in Pro to hydra , an animal like Hydra , but without tentacles.
