SPIRE

(Gr. ff^ti^ot, a twisting.) In Architecture, among the ancients, the base of a column: also the astragal or torus of the base. In modern architecture, it is an erection above the tower of a church, which diminishes gradually as it rises; sometimes rising in the form of a plain slender pyramid, polygonal on the plane.
