See TETRA ON IDE. Twenty-four species are known. The Ptarmigan ( Lagopus ) is exceptional in changing its plum IMG:content-0427.png:[blocks in formation] on the sides of its neck, and has no gizzard. Tetrao urogallus , the Caper caille of n. Eur-Asia, may exceed 12 lbs.; breeding takes place in March, and the males at the time appear to be under a series of spells. The Ruffed Grouse ( Bonase ) is exceptional in having its legs bare of feathers; it has special tufts on the sides of the neck. The males at various seasons perform a drumming by means of rapid up and down motions of the wings. See also SAND GROUSE.
