(THE WANDERING.) (Lit.) The name ofa fabulous character who forms the subject of a legend inserted in the chronicle of Matthew of Paris, in which he is represented as the Jew who reviled the Saviour on his way to execution, and for which Christ punished him by sentencing him to walk the earth forever. In later times, this myth has given rise to quite a literature of its own, from the respective pens of Schubart, Mosen, Klingmann, Quinet, Croly, Dumas the Elder, Elckers Hoffman, Eugène Sue, and Caroline Norton.
