COULTER, JOHN MERLE

(1851), botanist, 6. at Ningo, China. He was educated at Hanover College and at Indiana University. From 1872-3 he was botanist with the U. 8. Geol. Survey in. the Rocky Mountains and in 1874 became profe or of natural sciences at Hanover College. Five years later he accepted the position of profe or in biology at Wabash College which he resigned in 1891 to become president of Indiana University. He was also president of Lake Forest University from 1893 until 1896, when he became profe or and head of the department of botany at the University of Chicago. He was editor of the Botanical Gazette, which he founded in 1875, and was the author of many books on botany.
