gollach ( ch guttural)

[Gael. gobhlach= forked.] A name applied to the earwig, and to several species of beetle. *gõll-sheaf, s. [Etymol. of first element doubt ful; Eng. sheaf .] Apparently a sheaf of dry, with ered corn; hence, anything of little use or weight. "All the rest of the articles [i. e., of accusation] were gollsheaves that went out in a sudden blaze."- Hacket : Life of Williams , pt. ii., p. 92.
