French Protestant; State Councilor 1817; lecturer at the Sorbonne 1820; Deputy 1830; Minister of the Interior 1830, of Public Instruction 1832-36, of Foreign Affairs 1840-47; Academician 1836; Envoy to Englan England 184 gland 1840; Prime Minister 1847. His services to the state were eminent, but not greater than to historical literature, wherein he displayed great industry. His works are numerous, solid, and mostly familiar in English translations: prominent among them are Civilization in Europe, 1828, and in France, 1830; Memoirs of My Own Time, 1858-68; and Hist. France, 5 vols., 1870-75.
