scorza, skorza (z as tz)

[A Wall a chi an name.] Min.: An arenaceous variety of Epidote (q. v.). scor-zo-nër-a, subst. [From scurs on, the Catalonian name of the viper, for the bite of which these plants were considered an antidote.] Bot.: The typical genus of Scorzonerese (q. v.). Bracts imbricate; receptacle naked, pappus feathery, in several rows; achenes neither stalked nor beaked, with a lateral scar. Scorzonera hispan ica is cultivated for its roots, which are rated as a vegetable.
