(al’-e-uni) [L.]. Garlic. The bulb of A. sativum. It contains a pungent volatile oil (allyl sulphid), that is found also in the leek and the onion. The tubers are used both as a food and as a condiment, and are stimulants to digestion. Acepa, the common onion, and A. porrum, the leek, have similar qualities.
