Wager

(wa'jūr.) [Fr. gages.) Anything pledged on chance. Wagers are valid in law unle rendered expre ly void by statute or such as have an immoral tendency. Wagers on merely speculative subjects, arising out of circumstances in which the parties have no interest, cannot be recovered; where a W. is illegal, the parties may recover their deposits from the stakeholder. -W. of Battel.
