Cooper, Abraham

R.A., an English historical painter, в. 1787. In early life he pa ed much of his time among horses, and to this circumstance must be ascribed the direction which his artistic talent has taken. His first exhibited picture, Tam O'Shanter, was sent to the British Institution in 1814. He is the chief "battle painter" of the English school, and among his principal pictures may be mentioned, Blücher at the Battle of Ligny; Cromwell at Marston Moor; Lord Arundel capturing a Turkish Standard; Lord Arthur Capel defend ing Col chester during the Civil War: The Battle of Shrews bury; The Death of Harold; Richard I. and Sala din at Ascalon; The Battle of A aye; and The Battle of Waterloo. Several have been engraved. Died 1868.
