[0. Sp. alféres; Sp. alférez = an ensign, from Arab. al - färis 148 (al=the, and far is = a horseman).] An ensign or standard bearer. "It may be said to have been adopted for a time as an English word, being in use in our army during the civil wars of Charles I.
