Bear

This term is variously employed; as, a ve el is said to „ Bear off” or u Bear away" when sailing by the wind, or having the wind on her side, the course is changed till the wind blows from aft, or nearly so. To „ Bear off”, means also to push any object, as a boat, another ve el etc, from the ship’s side to prevent contact.
