Elgin and Kincar'dine, THOMAS BRUCE, EARL OF, an English statesman, B. 1777. He was amba ador to the Sublime Porte from 1789 to 1802, and availed himself of the opportunities of his station; he formed a vast collection of sculptures, and other antiquities, sold afterwards to the English government, and known as the Elgin Marbles. Much censure has been rightly lavished on him by Byron and others, for mutilating the noblest monuments of Athens. D.1841.
