[Lat.=a Guinea-fowl, from Gr. Meleagros =the son of Eneus, and one of the combatants at the Calydonian boar-hunt. It is fabled that his sisters were changed into guinea-fowl, whence the scientific name of the genus.] Ornith.: Turkey; a genus of gallinaceous birds of the family Meleagride, or the sub-family Meleagrinse.
