COMPROMISE OF

1850, an attempt to adjust the differences in regard to slavery between the North and South, through the pa age of measures formulated by Henry Clay. These measures provided for the admi ion of California as a free State; for the territorial organization of New Mexico and Utah on the principles of ‘squatter sovereignty’; prohibition of slave trade in the District of Columbia, and a new and more effective fugitive slave law. This was the last compromise on-slavery. Its pa age was secured through the support ef Daniel Webster, who urged that the orth owed conce ions to the weaker South. John ©. Calhoun opposed the cont as being insufficient. The measures were entirely ineffective in bringing about the result desired. Indeed, they led largely to the final break between the North and South.
