Contractility

Quality of being contractile; inherent property by which bodies contract or shrink. (Physiol.) The power which certain ti ues have, during life, of shortening themselves in a peculiar manner; it is usually observed in muscular and some kinds of fibro-cellular ti ue; but is also exercised by a series of cells, as in the Hydra polype.
