ECHINUS

(Yunanca köken — orijinale bakınız.) The generic name of the sea-urchins, which constitute the type of the cla EchinoderTna. The Linnaean genus is now subdivided into many subgenera; some of which have their names compounded of Echinus and some other word, as Echinohri us,Ech i no cidaris,Echim)clypeus,Ech i no conus,Echinocorys, Echirwcyamus, Ech i no discus, Echinoampas,Echi' nometra, Ech in one i is, Ech i no rod on, . Echinus. In Architecture, the same as the ovolo or quarter round, though the moulding is only properly so called when carved with eggs and anchors. (See Anchors.) It is the shell or husk of the chesnut, though the ornament does not seem to bear much resemblance to it. [s. 393]
