Atterbury, Francis

an English prelate, B. 1662. He was a man of great learning and brilliant talents, equally distinguished as scholar, preacher, and writer. As dean of Westminster and bishop of Rochester, he was chaplain to William III. and Mary. After the death of Queen Anne, A. was one of the non-juring bishops, and in 1722 was committed to the Tower of London, on suspicion of his being privy to a plot to restore the Pretender. After a trial, he was banished from England, and D. at Paris, 1732. At'tercliffe, a town of England, in the W. Riding of the co. of York, 1% m. N. E. of Sheffield. Pop . (1895) 16,574, chiefly colliers and artisans.
