General Officers

Those superior in rank to a colonel. In the U. S. Army the order of rank is: General, Lieutenant gen., Major-gen., Brigadier-gen. The corresponding conımands are corps d'armée, division of a corps, and a brigade of a division. The lieutenant-gen. has no specific command, and this rank, like that of general, no longer exists in our service. There are now 3 major-generals and 6 brigadier-generals in the U. S. Army. Besides these, the chiefs of the several military bureaus in the War Department have the rank of brigadier-gen.; viz.. Adjutant-gen., Inspector-gen., Quartermaster-gen., Commi ary-gen.. Judge Advocate-gen.. Surgeon-gen.. Chief of Engineers, Chief of Ordnance and Chief Signal Officer, making a total of 3 majors and 15 brigadier-generals.
