Laureate

(lau're-at,) or POET-LAUREATE. [From L. laureatus, crowned with laurel.] (Eng. Hist.) An officer appointed by the crown to compose odes, ., in honor of grand state occasions. The laureateship is now held by Alfred Tennyson, the most eminent of English living poets. [s. 530]
