CAFEINE

A chemical principle discovered in coffee, remarkable for containing much azote. See Coffee . CAJEPUT OIL is obtained from the leaves of the tree called Melaleuca Leu cad end ron by Linnæus, which grows upon the mountains of Amboyna, and in other of the Molucca islands. It is procured by distillation of the dried leaves along with water, is prepared in great quantities in the island of Banda, and sent to Holland in copper flasks. Hence as it comes to us, it has a green colour. It is very limpid, lighter than water, of a strong smell resembling camphor, and pungent taste like cardamoms. When rectified the copper remains in the retort, and the oil comes over colourle . It is used in medicine as a stimulant. See Oils Ethereous .
