N.N.E. of Paris; Gallo-Roman walls, Roman amphitheatre; 11th cent. castle; Gothic church; bishop’s seat till 1801; was held for a few days in Sept. 1914 by Germans, who put the mayor to death as reprisal for resistance offered by civilian population, and afterwards wantonly set fire to the town, causing great damage.
