The virgin's bower, Clematis Vitalba: so named as climbing over hedges and adorning the way. This is a vigorous species, with a woody stem sometimes as thick as the wrist, and widely climbing branches. Its inner bark is used in Switzerland for straining milk; the slender shoots in France serve to bind fagots; while the young tips are sometimes pickled.
