N. At.wt. 14.03, sp.gr..9701, sp.ht..243, valence III. V. Discovered by Rutherford 1772: colorle , odorle , tastele gas, forming of the atmosphere. Chemically it is extremely inactive, uniting directly with but few of the other elements. Water di olves 14 per cent by volume. It does not support respiration or combustion. It occurs in large quantities in KNO, and NaNO3. The most convenient way to obtain it is to remove the oxygen from air in a closed ve el by burning phosphorus; the contents of the ve el are then pa ed through caustic potash, and the gas is obtained fairly pure. Another method, yielding a purer product, is by heating ammonium nitrite. It is liquefied at - 124° C., 42 atm.; sp.gr. liquid.885. Nitrogen Bromide. NBra? Violently explosive, darkred, heavy, oily liquid, made by adding an aqueous solution of pota ium bromide to nitrogen trichloride under water.
