b. 1839. American etcher. His Life Stud ies of the Great Army, from studies made 1861-64, have a high rank. The first proofs from these plates were purchased by Gen. Sherman, and are now in the War Dept. The Reveille, A Night March, Hauling Guns at Acquia Creek, are among the finest of the series. Forbes, JAMES DAVID, D.C.L.. F.R.S., 1809-1868. After diligent investigations on the movement of Glaciers, he was led to reject the Sliding Theory of De Sau ure and the Dilatation Theory of Char pen tier. Attacking the problem as one of pure physics, he made accurate measurements with instruments of precision, and afterward proposed the Viscous Theory, in which ice is regarded as a plastic body capable of slowly flowing under pre ure.
