[From Gr. eleémosynë, from člěě môn, pitifully, mercifully, from élèèo, to pity, from eleos, pity, mercy, compa ion.) Given in charity; given or appropriated to support the poor; done or performed without reward; relating to charitable donations; founded by charitable donations, for the purpose of dispensing some gratuity or benefit. ( Law .) E. corporations are corporate bodies constituted for the perpetual distribution of the free alms or bounty of the founder of them, to such persons as he has directed.
