In chem., that property of certain compounds by virtue of which they differ in their molecular weights and in their chemical properties, though formed from the same elements, combined in the same proportion. Thus, the molecular weights of butyric acid (C4H8O2) and aldehyde (C2H4O) are 88 and 44 respectively and their chemical properties are wholly unlike, but both contain the same elements-carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen-combined in the same proportion.
