Ossa

, a lofty mountain of The aly, once the residence of the Centaurs. It was formerly joined to mount Olympus, but Hercules, as some report, separated them, and made between them the celebrated valley of Tempe. This separation of the two mountains was more probably effected by an earthquake, which happened, as fabulous accounts represent, about 1885 years before the christian era. O a was one of those mountains which the giants, in their wars against the gods, heaped up one on the other to scale the heavens with more facility.
