Leman (or GENEVA), Lake

At an altitude of 1,218 ft., this lake extends 45 m.e. and w.. with a maximum breadth of 9 m. and area of 233 sq. m. At certain seasons of the year its IMG:content-1058.png:[graphic] IMG:content-1059.jpg:[graphic] Market-Place and Town-Hall. Tilly were defeated by Gustavus Adolphus. Sept. 7, 1631, and by Swedes under Torstensen, Oct. 23, 1642. Here a great battle was fought. Oct. 16-18, 1813, between Napoleon's forces, 160,000 strong, and the allied armies of Austria, Ru ia, and Pru ia, 280,000. The French were beaten with a lo of 15,000 dead, as many wounded, 38,000 prisoners, and 300 cannon; the Pru ians lost 16,000, Ru ians 21,000, Austrians 14,000. L. has increased tenfold since 1800. Pop., 1891, 354,900.
