Chelonura (kelonura)

[NL., Chelophora (ke-lof'ō-rä), n. pl. [NL., Gr. χηλή, a hoof, claw, talon, + -φόρος, -bearing, Chelsea porcelain. See porcelain. Chelura (kē-lūra), n. [NL., IMG:content-0232.jpg:[blocks in formation] + ουρά, tail.] A genus of amphipod crustaceans, typical of the family Chelurida or wood-shrimps. C. into submerged wood, and is one of sharp rostrum, well suited plunging into the body of their victims, upon whose juices they subsist. The family contains predatory species, such as Chelyetes paras it i vorax, C. hetero palpus, etc., which it has been shown are strictly parasitic, although with a form of parasitism not contemplated in Van Beneden's cla ification, namely, a parasitism beneficial to the host, as the guest lives upon other parasites which are injurious to the host.
