GEORGE, a British historical painter, born 1805, succeeded Sir John Watson Gordon as president of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1864. The following are examples of his best manner: The Battle of Drumclog (1836); Shakspeare Brought Before Sir Thomas Lacy on a Charge of Deer- stealing (1837); The Covenanter's Communion (1839); A Highland Funeral (1840); John Bunyan and his Daughter Selling Laces at the Door of Bedford Gaol (1857); and Dawn Revealing the New World to Columbus, now in the Scottish National Gallery.
