OF. Oldest in Germany; founded 1386; controlled by Protestants from 1556; greatly injured by the Thirty Years' War: reorganized 1803. The library was sent to Rome in 1623, afterward to Paris, and restored to Heidelberg 1815; it has ab. 500,000 vols. The students in 1895 numbered 1,230.
