Ghiberti

LORENZO, (ge-bair'le,) a famous Italian sculptor, B. in Florence, 1378. He early commenced a new era in sculpture by a resuscitation of the cla ical style of art, and expended 20 years' labor on the bronze gate of the Baptistery of St. John in his native city, a performance which elicited the most laudatory praise of Michael Angelo. He aided Brunelleschi in the erection of the Duomo at Florence, and executed the bas reliefs of the shrine of San Zenobi. D. 1455. [s. 407]
