Scutum

A Roman buckler made of wood, the parts being joined together with little plates of iron, and the whole covered with a bull’s hide. In the middle was an umbo , or bo of iron, which jutted out, and was useful to glance off stones or darts. The scuta , in general, were 4 feet long, and different in size from the clypei , which were le , and quite round.
