Commune

(kom'mūn.) [Fr.] In France, a small territorial section, smaller than a canton, and corresponding somewhat to what in this country is termed a township. Each commune is governed by its own mayor and municipality. In the Middle Ages, a C. was a town which had obtained a charter of enfranchisement from the feudal lord. [s. 211]
