[Pref. poly-, and Gr. siphōn (gen it. siphōnos )=a siphon.] Botany : A genus of Rhodomelacese. Florideous Alge with cylindrical, more or le articulated, fronds, the joints consisting of a circle of longitu dinally arranged cells around a central cell. Known species about 300. põl-ý-spăst, subst. [Lat. poly spa stum, from Gr. polys many, and spaō =to draw; Fr. polys paste. 1. Mach .: A machine consisting of many pulleys for raising heavy weights. 2. Surg .: A similar apparatus used formerly for reducing dislocations. pol-ý-spērm, s. [Pref. poly-, and Eng. sperm.] A tree whose fruit contains many seeds. pol-ý-sperm-al, *pol-y-sperm-ous, a. [POLY SPERM.] Bot.: Containing many seeds. ( Balfour: Botany, § 546.) pol-y-sphær-ite, s. [Pref. poly-; Gr. sphæra =a ball, and suff. -ite ( Min.); Ger. polysphärit.] Min .: A variety of Pyromorphite (q. v.), containing phosphate of lime. Color, various shades of brown and gray, sometimes approaching to white. Found in mammillary and globular bundles of acicular radiating crystals. pol-ý-spör-oŭs, a. [Prefix poly- ; English stigm (a); adj. suff. -ous.] Bot.: Having many carpels, each giving origin to a stigma. pol-ý stō-ma, subst. [Greek polys tomos =many mouthed: poly =many, and stoma =mouth.] Zool.: An old genus of Trematoda. Poly stoma sanguicola is now Hexaihyridium venarum , an entozoon found occasionally in venous blood and in the sputa of hæmoptysis. pol-y-stom-a-ta, s. pl. [Pref. poly-, and Greek stomata, pl. of stoma a mouth.] Zool .: A section of the sub-kingdom Protozoa, in which the inceptive apparatus consists of a consid erable number of tentacular organs, each of which serves as a tubular sucking mouth, or to grasp.
