EPIMENIDES

(-déz), an ancient Greek philosopher and poet, born in Madame Mpinay Crete in the seventh century before Ohrist. He was held for an infallible prophet, and by some is reckoned among the seven wise men, instead of Per i an der. He is supposed to be the prophet referred to by St. Paul in Titus i, 12: ‘One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies.’’ EPIMETHEUS (ep-i-mé’thts), in Greek mythology, the son of Iapetus, brother of Pro me the us, and husband of Pandora. Epimetheus may _ be translated ‘afterthought,’ as Pro me the us ‘forethought.’ EPINAL, a town of Hastern France, capital of the department of the osges, on the Moselle. It is well built and has handsome quays, an ancient Gothic church, @ communal college, a public library of 30,000 vohimes, & museum, and extensive fortifications. The town was occupied by the Germans in the Franco*ru ian War of 1870, and since that time a modern fortre has been conatructed. The manufactures consist of articles in metal, cottons, linens, woollens, earthenware, and leather. The famous paper-mills of Archettes are in the vicinity. Pop. 27,350.
